Course Syllabus
- TITLE OF COURSE: PE1251 - Swimming I
- COURSE DESCRIPTION: 1 credit hour lab. This course is designed for the non-swimmer or one with limited swimming skills. Basic strokes are taught along with elementary forms of rescues and personal safety. For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
- PROGRAM AND DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT: The Seward County Community College/Area Technical School physical education program will broaden the understanding of fitness for life by providing general education, appropriate technology, and professional development opportunities that promote a healthy lifestyle.

- SCCC/ATS OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to do the following SCCC/ATS Institutional Outcomes.
- Outcome #1 - Read with comprehension, be critical of what they read, and apply knowledge gained to real life situations.
- Outcome #9 - Exhibit workplace skills that include respect for
others, teamwork competence, attendance/punctuality, decision making, conflict
resolution, truthfulness, honesty, positive attitude, judgment, and
responsibility.
- COURSE OUTCOMES:
- To equip individuals with basic water safety skills and knowledge in order to make them reasonably safe while in, on, or around the water.
- To promote swimming as a lifetime recreational activity.
- To provide students with information on swimming as a fitness activity used to improve health, increase stamina and endurance.

- Physical and mental adjustment to the water
- Buoyancy and body position
- Propulsion and coordinated stroking
- Water entries
- Personal safety skills and basic rescue techniques
- Artificial respiration and safety information
- Combined skills
- Breath control
- Treading water and changing directions
- Use of personal floatation device
- Aquatic recreation

- INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESOURCE MATERIALS:
- METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: Methods of assessing the general course outcomes and the specific course competencies include article reports, attendance, participation, mid-term exam, and final exam.
- SCCC/ATS Instructional Outcome #1 will be assessed and measured by class participation and writing assignments indicating comprehension of material read and evaluation of swimming skills.
- SCCC/ATS outcome #9 will be
assessed and measured by class participation and attendance.
